How To Remove Wrinkles From Projector Screens

Baptisms - gifts, etiquette and history explained

There are two types of ceremonies. religious and nonreligious. Regardless of which type is chosen, The common theme throughout is love and surrounding the child with family and friends to celebrate the birth and life ahead.

Religious ceremonies: A christening is the first introduction children to religious faith. A Catholic baptism, parents make their declarations, the baby is baptized with holy water and a lit candle representing Jesus as the light of the world, is given to parents and sponsors. The priest may ask parents to attend preparation classes to fully understand the importance of baptism. Catholic baptism is often held as a separate service for one or more children, without hymns and lasts approximately 30 minutes.

In a Church of England baptism, baptism takes place in the main church service on Sunday and the baby was taken to the police, sprinkled holy water, and sponsors and parents promise God they will raise the child in the Christian faith.

If you decide to go for a baptism, you need to talk to the vicar of your local church. They will explain the service and can ask questions about your own faith and that of the godfather and godmother. You can then book a date.

Secular Ceremonies (Non-religious): There are a wide range of non-religious celebrations to choose to include welcome, thanksgiving ceremony or baby naming. These options are free of any commitment to the Christian faith. A ceremony of the British Humanist Association can take place anywhere you like. A celebrant trained, licensed will help you create a unique and personal. They can provide templates for ceremonies that you can customize to your own situation, and they can suggest readings, poetry or music. You can include contributions from family and friends and end it all with a tea or buffet. These ceremonies last about 20 minutes.

Baptisms usually take place within the first year of baby's life, although some parents wait until the child is slightly older.

In general, photography is welcome during all types of ceremonies, but it may be worth checking with the person who presides over the first as the congregation or gathering is likely to be invited to photograph the child, family and sponsors at specific points during the ceremony. Of course it can also be photographs before and after.

The child will usually be dressed in a special christening outfit / gown or family heirloom garment. Women should dress smartly - hats are not necessary and for men, suits or smart shirt and trousers. The links are often not a necessity, particularly for summer ceremonies though if you are the father or godfather, you should dress in costume.

Usually after the ceremony a buffet or tea is held at the home of the parent. The child will be shown off to family and friends, and christening gifts is generally presented to the child. After the buffet, the official cake may be cut, and at this stage, some people choose to plant a tree or dedicate a plant that will grow with the child.

Role of Godparents: there are usually three sponsors - two of the same sex as the child. The role of the sponsor comes from the days when converts to the early Christian church were usually adults whose parents were not Christians. The role of godparents was to provide a Christian mentor to help them in life. People also link the role of godfather to that of becoming 'legal guardian "Children should never be neglected. However, it should be written in a will with the permission of the sponsors themselves. Non-religious participants usually engage a 'mentor' who watches over the child and guide them through life with the help, care and advice. Sponsors are generally chosen for their own Christian beliefs but also because they are very close relatives or family members. Godparents or guardians should be people who will be around to offer support to the child, if necessary.
